Women and Knee Arthritis

In this fast pace of life, health occupies top priority but there are instances where the individual though health conscious either falls sick or has health problems due to circumstantial conditions or due to lack of something within.

By nature women have a lot more risk factors for having problems of health regarding the bone structure. Arthritis is one condition that affects most of the women these days. The factors could either be genetic or biological or due to hormonal imbalance. Unfortunately many women have also added a fourth factor to this condition and that is obesity.

In all, women have this problem of osteoarthritis being the most common form of the disease with the incidence being more in the men than in the women. Experts say that around 27 million people in the United States of America have osteoarthritis and that around 60% of them are women. Before the age of 55, more men have osteoarthritis but after this age it is the women who are seen to have this condition.

Joints that are affected by osteoarthritis also tend to differ according to the gender. Men are normally subject to arthritis affecting the hips while the women have it either in the hands or in the knees.

Biological factors

Women generally have bodies that are designed to give birth. So the tendons in the lower half of the body is more elastic in nature than that of the men’s body. So the joints move more in the case of the women. Hence the joints have lesser stability and thus have more injury problems.

The hips in the women are wider than the knee. So the knee joints are not straight as that in men. To the basic woman’s body actually leads to more knee injuries and these injuries later on lead to a condition of osteoarthritis in women. IN fact women who play soccer have more number of knee injuries that the men players.

This is another reason osteoarthritis affects women. It appears that that women who had mothers with the problem would develop the same joint problems and it has been proved in researches that arthritis has genetic links.

The cartilage is found in between the joints and is the cushion for the bones here. This helps to prevent pain and allows the joint to move properly. It has been seen that the female hormones have a lot of affect on the cartilage of the women’s bone structure. So the hormone estrogen actually protects the cartilage from getting inflamed. Inflammation often leads to osteoarthritis. But when the estrogen levels go down as in menopause or after hysterectomy then the cartilage loses its protection and thus the risk of developing osteoarthritis increases. This happens even if they are on hormone replacement therapy.

Sometimes if the women goes through puberty at a very early age and has more children and if she is taking hormone replacement therapy then she would be subjected to higher risk of a hip or a knee replacement surgery.

Pregnancy and Delivery

Giving birth to children is another major reason for developing conditions like osteoarthritis and this has been found even in the research that women are more susceptible to such conditions due to pregnancy and delivery.

HRT and Birth control pills

There has been no effect of birth control pills on osteoarthritis condition but using HRT has surely increased the risk for a woman to undergo knee replacement and has been seen in around 58% of the cases.

Obesity has also affected women such that the extra weight puts more pressure on the joints and causes the cartilage to wear away faster thus creating a problem in the knee leading to osteoarthritis condition.

The osteoarthritis condition in a woman is due to the conditions of her general biology and are an inevitable part of being a female. However it could be controlled, monitored and avoided.
