Asthma is a very common respiratory disease, which attacks the bronchial tube and the trachea. It is generally found in young children and adults but can affect people of all ages and in all walks of life. It is estimated that more than 20 million American children and adults have asthma, the #1 chronic disease among children in the U.S and a leading disease among adults. According to the U.S EPA (environment protection agency) indoor air can be significantly more polluted than outdoor air which can trigger asthma. Americans spend 90% of their time indoors; hence it is important to maintain the indoor air quality (IAQ) if you have asthma.  The cornerstone of modern asthma management lies in reducing the sources of triggers and exposure to triggers.

Asthma is caused due to household allergens in mattresses, pillows, furniture, toys, bathrooms, air ducts and many more

You can reduce the impact of the allergens by:

  • Install an exhaust in the bathroom or keep windows open to avoid molds. It is important to note that the fabrics are dry completely before use. Check for all leaking pipes and get it amended.
  • Use dust- mite resistant pillows and mattresses to keep dust mites from entering into them. Buy pillows which can stand up to frequent washing to reduce dust mites. You should also replace pillows every 5 years and mattresses every 10 years.
  • While buying toys look for fabrics and fillings that contain no allergenic material, or chemical, dyes or preservatives. Toys should be able to withstand frequent freezing and washing as that is the only way to clean and remove allergens from toys.
  • If possible avoid buying furniture made from chipboard or manufactured wood as they may contain organic compounds which give off a colorless gas.
  • Always buy washing machine that can reach 130° hot water temperature to kill mites and eggs.
  • Keep pets outside as it has been seen that hair and dander from the pets can cause serious asthma symptoms
  • Do not smoke indoors or near entryways or open windows.
  • Nitrogen dioxide comes from appliances that burn fuel, so make sure that there is ample ventilation when using such appliances. Always try o choose direct vent combustion appliances, where both combustion air and exhaust are vented to the outside.
  • Try to keep rodents and cockroaches away from the house by keeping all food in sealed containers, cleaning up crumbs and dish washing to keep the kitchen clean.

Reducing indoor air pollutants is the first step in improving the air quality of your home. In other words healthy materials and good indoor quality air will help you in moving towards making the environment green.

Green and energy efficient homes are considered to be healthier for asthma victims.

It is advised that you can follow these basic rules to keep asthma at bay but always take advice from the doctor who would be able to pinpoint specific allergies that you might have. You can follow the suggestions offered to make the environment green and at the same time that will make you healthy.
