Antibodies are basically protein compounds prepared by and secreted from the WBCs; the primary functions of antibodies are recognizing and attacking foreign bodies like bacteria and viruses invading one’s body. The other scientific term used for the antibodies is: immunoglobulins. Antibodies are found in our spinal fluid, blood and some other parts of our body.

Antibodies cause health problems in people with autoimmune disorders. Antibodies might attack an individual’s own body cells if he or she has an autoimmune disorder. There are certain laboratory tests that can determine the kind and amounts of antibodies present in one’s blood; this helps in finding out the type and level of the disease of infection the person is suffering from. For performing antibody tests, blood is taken from the patient’s arm or from back of this hand. The blood sample is then sent to the laboratory for being tested for antibodies. The common diagnostic procedures for antibody testing are:

Antibody titer:

This test reveals the existence and the exact levels of the antibodies in one’s blood.  The results of the antibody titer also offer facts about past infections like chicken pox. Doctors recommend this diagnostic test for known the kind of immunization technique will be suitable for the patient. The test is most commonly used for diagnosing intensity of autoimmune disorder like systematic lupus erythrematosus, identifying the occurrence of infections like mononucleosis and viral hepatitis etc.

Antinuclear antibody tests:

Doctors use this diagnostic test for screening patients for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

Thyroid antibody tests:

This test is specifically meant for diagnosing the autoimmune thyroid disorders. Mostly, this type of antibody tests is conducted in conjunction with other thyroid hormone tests like TSH, T3 and T4.
