In this world, you will find a lot of people who are suffering from asthma and different allergies. But, have you even realized that there is something common between these two infections? Yes, the answer is their cause! So, let’s first know the causes before becoming aware of how to stay away from such infections. This is because after all it is the causes that will help you in identifying the precautionary measures.

Knowing the Causes

Allergens are the root cause of allergy and asthma. These allergens are nothing but dust, germs, pet and human dander, pollens, and small insects. Dust itself contains small insects called mites, which can make you or any of your family members a victim of allergy or asthma.

There are two more mediums that lead to allergy or asthma, which are molds and cockroaches that exist in wet places. Yeah, a cockroach’s dropping contains a typical infectious protein that leads to asthma. So, keeping your living areas dry up to maximum possible extent is a straight away precaution to be taken against mold. Such a simple effort will prevent asthma, congestion, and other allergy symptoms to enter into the lives of your family members.

Getting Aware of Precautions

Cleanliness is the ideal precaution that needs to be taken against asthma and all allergies. Recall the famous proverb, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”; which inspires us to keep our homes and surroundings clean. So, if you are conscious to protect yourself and your family members from asthma and different allergies, the need of the hour is to ensure that places where there are high chances of dust and germs are kept clean and neat. Apart from this vital measure, here are some more tips for protection from the two infections:

  • Use air conditioners. This will prevent the outside dust to enter and accumulate in your home as the windows, the main entry point of dust, would remain closed.
  • Avoid use of carpets & rugs as they are capable of holding dust particles. It is recommended to use tile and linoleum flooring to prevent dust particles.
  • Use vacuum cleaners daily. Preferably, use cleaners that come with HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate) technology filters.
  • Wear safety mask & gloves while cleaning the rooms and floors.
  • Keep kitchen, utensils, and electric products clean.
  • Clean dustbins regularly.
  • Cover the mattresses and pillows with allergy proof or plastic material.
  • Build your furniture with materials such as plastic, wood, leather, and vinyl; as cleanliness can be maintained easily.
  • Use curtains that are washable.
  • Avoid window blinds as they can accumulate reasonable amount of dust.
  • Avoid pets. However, if you already have them at home, it becomes necessary for you to take the following measures:
    • Bathe them daily.
    • Do not allow them to touch the furniture.
    • Avoid their entry in bedrooms.

Preventing the Growth of Molds

Here are some precautions that need to be taken to prevent mold:

  • Avoid putting soaked garments in washing machines.
  • Ensure that eatables are kept in air tight containers.
  • Use products that kill molds.
  • Use exhaust fans, dehumidifiers, or ventilators in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Use leaks in indoor & outdoor regions.
  • Use dehumidifiers in areas where climate tends to be humid.
  • Clean the humidifiers & dehumidifiers regularly.
  • Fit vapor barriers on concrete flooring.
  • Prevent cockroaches & other insects by using insect killing products or by sealing their entry points such as wall cracks and floor gaps.
