Methadone is a drug offered to individuals for de-addicting them from heroin & other habit-forming substances. The use of methadone in this manner is a contentious option, with opponents of such approach asserting that a barter system is in play here as an addict basically trades one habit with another. Methadone is a medication that has to be ingested (fluid or pill form) for treating addition, though it might even be administered via jab form (ampoule). Many individuals carry on using methadone for protracted periods despite having ceased the use of heroin.

Methadone is at present chiefly deployed for treating addiction to narcotic substances. It is a long acting drug with effects felt for longer periods of time (till thirty-six hours on end) as compared to medications with morphine. Due to this reason, it is administered only one time daily to detoxify the body of an addiction to heroin & continued maintenance of sobriety.

Detrimental Reactions to Using Methadone

Mortalities arise more often at the onset of therapy in methadone programmes – generally excess dosages (mistaken estimation of tolerance) & are influenced by co-existent conditions like pneumonia, hepatitis. Methadone usually involves the complete gamut of opioids side-effects, inclusive of tolerance developed & being dependent (physically & psychologically). Depression of respiratory centers can turn lethal. The release of histamines could lead to low blood pressure or bronchial spasms. Feeling constipated, nauseous or puking, sedated, oedema and vertigo are some symptoms of methadone addiction experienced.

Methadone Over-dosage Symptoms

  • All-body muscular hypertonicity.
  • Breathlessness & slackened, mellow, sluggish respiration.
  • Halted respiration – at times lethal within two to four hours.
  • Miosis or pupil of the eye constricts.
  • Blue tinged skin or nails of the fingers & lip area.
  • Spasmodic sensations in the abdomen &/or GI tract.
  • Feeling constipated.
  • Weakened cardiac pulse.
  • Hypotension.
  • Feeling drowsy.
  • Feeling disoriented.
  • Coma.

What is methadone addiction?

Frequent use can cause methadone addiction or one becomes physically dependent on it. When regular methadone users (prescription/non-prescription) halt its use they would start experiencing withdrawal symptoms. The alterations physically because of methadone are analogous to other opiate types such as heroin; suppression of cough reflex, pupil contraction, sleepiness & being constipated. Several people using methadone feel unwell on firstly using it. Female methadone users might fail to get their menses regularly – though could yet be capable of conceiving.

A major proportion of heroin addicts confess to being capable of kicking the heroin habit with greater ease than foregoing methadone. An augment in methadone fatalities is perhaps because of the streets mode for using methadone as a replacement for heroin and illegitimate usage of methadone for getting a high rather than for preventing withdrawal symptoms.
