Man is always exposed to the toxins that are produced by algae when he consumes sea food. The most common health problems caused by algae are fish and shellfish poisoning. Amnesic Shell fish poisoning, Diarrheic shellfish poisoning, ciguatera fish poisoning, paralytic shellfish poisoning, and neurotoxin shellfish poisoning are some of the ways algae could affect the human body.

Each of the problems are caused due to the presence of a varied species of toxic algae which are seen to occur in the coastal waters of the United States and the other parts of the world. With an increase in the transport of seafood in locally and internationally, the entire human population is at a risk of contracting some kind of sea food allergy or the other. It has been sent hat the ciguatera is responsible for most of the sea food intoxications. There is a growing evidence which shows that the other reactions are also on the rise.

Mainly affecting the neurological and the gastrointestinal systems, gastroenteritis is normally seen to develop within a day of eating the toxic shellfish. The main symptoms are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and cramps in the abdomen. There are many cases where neurological symptoms also appear. Normally this is seen around a couple of days after eating shellfish. Symptoms for this include seizures, headaches, dizziness, disorientation, short term memory loss and also coma at times. Many people die due to domoic acid which is mainly found in the animals and the human beings.

The Cigtuatera Fish poisoning occurs due to presence of some organism which cause the problems. The symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the abdomen, muscular aches, sweating, dizziness, anxiety, and a lot of tingling in the mouth and the digits. Sometimes there have been instances of death and paralysis. The recovery time is dependent on the condition of the person. It could take weeks, days and even months. Manitol is a way you could rapidly have a cure for the disease. One should not eat any kind of tropical reef fish as they have ciguatoxin and maitotoxin which cause the problem.

Then you have diarrheic shellfish poisoning which again produces symptoms of gastrointestinal disorder. It normally begins around half an hour after consumption and is mainly caused due to eating toxic shellfish. The illness is not fatal and has nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, chills and cramps in the abdomen. The recovery is usually within three days and can be treated without medical treatment.

Neurotoxic shellfish poisoning comes due to a syndrome that is very much like that of ciguatera. The neurological and gastronomical symptoms are present in this condition. Added to this you have the toxic aerosols and the asthma like symptoms, apart from many other symptoms that go unnoticed sometimes.

Thus algae have a major role to play in the manner in which the human body reacts to shellfish and fish.
