Most of the women restrict the utility of expensive anti-aging creams to cut down the expenses of our beauty regimes. Just because our beauty budgets are contracting, it doesn’t mean that the glow and luster of our faces should get wiped off. So, we sought views of Lisa Drayer, MA, RD, author of ‘The Beauty Diet,’ to find out whether there are some measures that can overturn the signs of aging from inside out. Check out her tips which render a whole new meaning to the old oldage by “You are what you eat.”

The Power of Antioxidants
Lisa Drayer describes the free-radical theory of aging in her book, where she presents clear description wherein she says, that each day we are exposed to free radicals (unstable atoms or molecules) that “wreak havoc on a molecular level.” If this process continues, then over a period of time, it sprouts dilapidating diseases like cancer, cataract, wrinkles, and other such diseases pertaining to old age. Ultimately, the question that evokes in our mind is that how do these free radicals enter our body?

Few culprits that can be attributed for this are alcohol, stress, sun exposure and air pollution; not only these, other normal activities like breathing and digestion also execute free radicals. Well, got scared, after listening in-depth facts. Don’t worry, there are effective measures that can fight against them. Let me calm you by informing some cool and crispy details. These free radicals can be effectively combated by consuming high amount of antioxidants.

So, now it’s the time to divulge some strong antioxidants, they include beta-carotene, varied phyto-chemicals, Vitamins A, C and E. Don’t worry, the names sound to be new, however these all lie at our disposal. This nutrition can be found in natural fruits and vegetables. According to Drayer, “Blueberries top the list of antioxidant rich-foods.” Because of which it has tracked position in her top list of beauty foods. Other sources of antioxidants include onions, broccoli, red grapes, strawberries, raspberries, dark chocolate, red wine and tea.

Mega Omega-3s
All of us are very well familiar with ‘good fats’ and Omega-3’s are the best in the whole. Drayer explains that “they help lubricate our skin and provide moisture to cells,” which in turn makes our skin supple and lustrous. Most foods that are enriched with a type of omega-3 known as DHA are snack bars, yogurt, cheese and milk. Even walnuts, which have been a part of top beauty foods contains omega-3s. Drayer explains that they have been linked to betterment of skin health.

Making the Switch
After reading this article, you might come to know the basic fact that the entire life we people collect free radicals, but have you ever thought what if the requisite limit of omega servings can’t be accumulated? Wouldn’t it be a huge loss? Wrong. Drayer says that “We see a lot of research that looks at groups for periods as short as 10 weeks, and you can see that they’ve had improvements in their health or beauty [after following an antioxidant- and omega-3-rich diet].” So start following the healthy diets. Also as Drayer rightly says “We’re constantly accumulating more free radicals in our lifestyles, so the sooner we can get started, the better.” Below I am presenting some easy ways to include anti-aging foods in your diet.

  1. The more color, the better: Drayer sees each fruit distinctly as each fruit has its own package of nutrients. Therefore remember while you are leisurely walking around the passageway, try to pick fruits in different color, so the more different the colors, the more you will nourish your body with different types of vitamins.
  2. Make smart substitutions: At times, the simplest change doesn’t seem to be obvious. For instance: many people start their mornings with oatmeal and water, but they cam make a healthy start by replacing it with low fat milk that is enriched with DHA; also instead of regular fries, try to eat sweet potato fries. Drayer recommends everyone’s favorite indulgence, i.e. she suggests eating dark chocolate covered with pretzels instead of a milk chocolate candy bar.
  3. It’s about adding, not subtracting: While many of the healthy food diets suggest of omitting several foods and eating upto a certain limit, Drayer’s diet on the contrary, recommends adding numerous stuffs to your diet. For instance: if anyone eats cereals every morning, then add into it a cup of berries. Or if anyone is hasting to reaching their workplace and don’t have time to cook breakfast, then they can eat a blend of walnuts and dried fruits.

Top Beauty Foods
Before embarking on a new anti-aging regime, Drayer propounds of setting one new goal every week. She explains the underlying cause by saying that “if you just set small goals, you can better manage your overall health.” So, she recommends these top anti-aging and beautifying foods. We have mentioned their contents, whether antioxidants or omega-3s. Include them in your routine diet, and add sparkles to your beauty.

  1. Low-fat yogurt
  2. Blueberries contain antioxidants
  3. Sweet Potatoes contain antioxidants
  4. Spinach contain antioxidants
  5. Tomatoes contain antioxidants
  6. Walnuts contains both omega-3’s and antioxidants
