  • Fill Your Plate (and Pantry) with Many Different Foods

Positive traits: As the famous saying cites “Variety is the spice of life,” it is absolutely true and an effective way. How? As it prevents boredom, which is a nightmare as it is a diet disaster. For instance: if you are served grilled chicken with steamed vegetables every night on a regular basis, and you compel yourself to stick with this diet, then you may find yourself munching a double cheese burger before the week ends.

Negative traits:
Variety may impel you to eat loads of food. This is because of a phenomenon called as ‘Sensory-specific Satiety.’ Hollie Raynor Phd, RD, explains “When flavors are limited, we tend to eat less.” Also a study conducted by Dr. Raynor reported that dieters who were limited to just one type of snack ate lesser calories than those who ate several varieties.

Caution: Prefer eating variety of fruits, vegetables and other low calorie foodstuffs that are your favorites. However, when it takes into account fattening stuffs, then the same rules apply as well.

  • Eliminate Alcohol

Positive traits: Calories loaded in your favorite cocktails helps in adding up and people start making bad food preferences after alcohol lessens their inhibitions.

Negative traits: A research found that people who drink up to moderate levels i.e. one to two glasses per day tend to more fitter and leaner than those who are heavy drinkers and non-drinkers. Might be because, people who drink up to moderate levels can indulge in all things including fat foods in moderation. And other study published in ‘Journal of the National Cancer Institute’ reported that regular consumption of moderate amount of alcohol triggers the generation of ‘leptin’- a hormone which curbs appetite.

Caution: If you can restrict yourself for drinking up to one or two glasses of low calorie options like light beer or wine, then move ahead and cheers for a fitter you. But if you can’t control after one or two rounds or drink high calorie drinks like an apple martini which consists about 235 calories, then you are better if you give up.

  • Say No to Seconds

Positive traits: For a slimmer and healthier body, it is better if you check portions of food and abstain from over eating at each meal.

Negative traits: You might feel to serve that extra scoop in your plate and end up eating loads of calories than you would have got from two smaller plates.

Caution: If you think that, that extra scoop would be sufficient and will not be excessive, then go ahead and follow this. But, if you develop habit of getting back to kitchen to dig up more, no matter whatever it is or if you scoop extra food in your plate to avoid extra seconds than get rid of this habit. Instead of this, start by taking a small portion and wait for 20 minutes, in the meanwhile let your stomach decide whether it is full or not. After waiting, if it craves for more food, then you can head in the kitchen to take little more.
