Children normally grow well and stay well. But there are many situations and conditions wherein the children usually have a problem with some part of the body. Vision impairment is one such problem that the children normally face. Squinting, rubbing the eyes are all signs that the child is having some basic problem with vision

There are many symptoms for vision issues. In the first few months of birth, infants see only objects that are around just around 8 to 10 inches from their face. Only til the child is around 12 to 16 weeks does the child begin to develop the concepts of perception of depth, eye hand co-ordination and eye body co-ordination and also the ability to judge the distances. It is not often that children have problems of vision at this age.

Child Health and VisionVision problems in children tend to come when the child is between 18 months and 4 years old. Two main common vision problems are a crossed or wandering eye which is seen to disturb around 3% to 5% of the children. The symptoms for this include an eye that seems to be crossed when compared to the other eye. It is not the eye that is the problem but the way it looks.

The next problem is the uneven focus. Her one eye seems to be more farsighted than the other. It is seen to affect around 2% to 3% of the children. The vision is compromised in some manner. It might not seem very worrisome at times but if the condition goes untreated then the eye that functions well would also slowly get spoilt. The brain gradually ignores all that it sees from the weak eye. It also stops forming the nerve connection that leads to it. The loss of vision in the weak eye is lost totally by the time the child reaches the age of 9 or 10. When the vision gets weak the condition is called lazy eye or amblyopia. This can be corrected and reversed but it has to be cured by getting it detected early with a vision screening.

The first vision screening is started by the pediatrician, family doctor , the eye specialist and the school nurse. Generally it is held that the vision screening has to be a part of the routine check up of the child. Frequent eye exams ensure that the eye s maintained well.

The health care provider determines what exactly you should do about the eye. The most important thing is that the earlier age you get your eyes checked the better for all. Ideally doctors recommend that you should get your eyes checked at the age of three.

If there is any vision problem during this time then remedial action could be taken. The treatments for amblyopia include eye patches, surgery, prescription lenses etc.

Vision Problem in ChildAmblyopia is a condition that occurs because the eye is damaged due to the fact that there is a misalignment of the eye. This also happens because the focus is lost. The first step that is taken is to treat the main problem and this is usually done with special glasses, eye drops and eye patches.

The main idea of using the patches, lenses is to ensure that the vision is blurred or occluded in the eye that is stronger so that the weaker eye can work harder. This helps in enhancing the function of the brain and helps to start sending the right kind of signals to the eye that is weak.

There are prescription lenses that help in improving the alignment and focus of the weak eye. Surgery is the best remedy for the muscles of the eye if none of the above procedures cure the condition of amblyopia.

Vision treatments last till the eye that is weak gets better. For most children the patch is worn for around a year. For some children the treatment sometime takes a longer time as the brain gets used to getting new connections. You as a parent can help the child to follow through the treatment for corrective vision.

Child care and vision problems create a lot of confusion in the child’s mind. You as a parent can ensure that you help in restoring the corrected vision and help your child to tide through this problem easily.
