Blastomycosis: A Fatal Illness

Submitted by on December 7, 2009 – 9:45 amNo Comment

The earth and the human life are being led by various fungal creatures whether positively or negatively since last so many years or centuries. However, various researchers and doctors are finding the ways whether theses all creatures can be used positively to treat other diseases. Fungal infections can lead to several diseases and even can be the reason of death. Blastomycosis, which is also known as ‘North American Blastomycosis’ is one of those disease that is led or developed by fungal infections.

What is Blastomycosis?

Blastomycosis is mainly a fungus and infectious sickness that starts from the lungs and at times can explore in the whole body especially on the skin surface. The infections can affect lungs, mouth, skin and tissues below the skin or even in the prostate and epididymis. The main source of the fungus is unknown. Researchers say that Central and South America and parts of Africa are the main places where these type funguses are found.

Causes of Blastomycosis:

Blastomycosis treatmentThe people who have a weak immune system like the patient of AIDS or the persons who are organ transplant recipients can be influenced by the disease. Out of 100,000 persons, this infection is found in 1 or 2, whereas men are more affected than women. The infection occurs if a person inhales or breaths in the spores or the germs coined as Blastomyces Dermatitidis from the air. After inhaled in the lungs, they increase their number and pass through the blood in the whole body. When the virus affects the lungs, the symptoms cannot be seen but later on the infectivity spreads in the form of skin rashes or bone disease or in the form of patches on the bladder, kidney, and prostate. People who come to the direct connection with the soil or work directly with dirt and soil such as gardeners and farmers can get the infections very soon because the spores   or germs are mostly found in the soil. With this, the fungus can be transmitted if a man is bitten by an infected dog. The Mississippi River valley of America mostly is well-known for transmitting this virus.

Symptoms of Blastomycosis:

The main symptom of blastomycosis is dry cough that can also produce some sputum. The cough can arise over the time depending on the severity level of the fungus. Patient can have serious coughing in the beginning or in some cases, the cough can go worsen. The other main symptom is chest pain. In addition to that patient can also have breathlessness, fever, chills and even sweating. The virus can also make the person very tired. Skin-sores are very significant symptoms, which can initially come in small size but later on can be get bigger and begin oozing pus. It can also affect the scrotum of the patient; however, the physicians are not yet able to understand the reason behind it. Many times the skin sores spreads in to the scrotum. The patient can also have Bloody mucus, pain in joints and even excess weight loss.

Exams and tests:

The test for Blastomyces mainly measures the Blastomyces in the blood. The tests include fungal blood culture tests,   Chest x-ray, tests of skin lesions and even the tests of the pus that are coming out of the swellings . These tests are been done because of many reasons like as for an example the status of the virus or it the existence of the virus is expected. They are also been done to check the status of the results of medicines.

Treatment of Blastomycosis:

The patient should immediately go for a treatment after it is proved that the disease has occurred. Mostly doctors suggest the patients to be hospitalized to provide an authentic treatment in the case of serious infections. The patients are been prescribed anti-fungal medicines but usually the anti-fungal treatments are given by directly   inserting into the veins of his/her body. Some additional therapies are also given to the patient to keep him/her well-hydrated. Blastomycosis is a serious infection and thus should be treated in a proper way. As the early symptoms are very much similar to the other diseases and doctors can be confused, there should be a proper diagnosis. Patient should have a proper converse with the doctor to check the problems and the infections.

Prevention:

Still now, there is not any particular medicine or vaccine available in the market to prevent from the exposure to B. dermatitidis. However, some recent research has invented a vaccine named live recombinant vaccine strain of B. dermatitidis. This vaccine has been recognized as strongly immunogenic and has also been tried in human patients. The patients who are in the high risk of having the disease can be treated by the vaccine. Nevertheless, the people who are living in the areas which has a high risk of influencing the disease should get a special awareness and immediate treatment for Blastomycosis.
