All About Women and Angioplasty

Research says that women are less likely to have an angioplasty as compared to men. An angioplasty is a process by which the doctors bypass a blockage in the heart. Doctors decide whether you need to have a bypass or an angioplasty and accordingly take decisions.  An X-Ray called the coronary angiogram is taken and the condition determined.

This X ray also called cardiac catheterization is done with a catheter that is guided into the arteries of the heart with a special dye. This is called the contrast medium.  This dye is injected into the arteries, which supply blood to the heart. The angiogram helps to find out the location and extent of the block.

Women undergo this test if the risk factors and age indicate a heart problem. It has also been seen that black women had lesser changes than white men for cardiac catheterization did.

A balloon angioplasty is usually done with a long thin tube, which is known as a catheter. It is inserted into an artery either in the forearm or the in the groin. There is a guidewire, which is a thing wire that helps to guide the catheter within. The catheter has a balloon at the end that is blown to push the plaque that blocks the artery. This goes back to the arterial wall. Balloon angioplasty usually ends with a stent method.  The stent is a tiny wire mesh tube.  this is inserted into the artery so that the artery opens up.

Also called percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty this is the best way a block is handled these days. All clogged arteries are treated this way and this helps to do away with the hardened plaque.

The stent replacement and angioplasty are safe for women. Around 1% of the women undergo this method. Women and angioplasty have a lot of things to be taken care of.  One has to be careful at such times.
