Botulism is a very rare ailment and is mainly caused due to Clostridium botulinum, which is a bacteria. It generally occurs in the soil. This bacterium produces a toxin that affects the nerves. There are  three kinds of botulism :

Food borne botulism comes when the toxin attacks the food that you eat.

Wound botulism is caused due to the bacteria that results in wounds.

Then you have infant botulism which is mainly caused by eating the bacterial spores. This is normally seen to occur from honey . All the three forms of bacteria are disastrous and need a medical emergency.

The symptoms of botulism are inclusive of blurred vision, double vision, slurred speech and drooping eyelids. There is a lot of difficulty in swallowing and there is considerable weakness in the muscles. The mouth runs dry and the treatment includes a lot of antitoxins, surgery of infected wounds and a lot of intensive medical care.

One can prevent botulism by protecting oneself from canning foods . Also it is required that you don’t let babies eat the honey . Also ensure you have immediate medical care for the wounds that are infected. The conditions of botulism are very scary as the muscles are very weak and the patient also has a lot of breathing problems. It is a rare disease and less than 100 cases of infant botulism are seen to occur every year in the United States of America. It has also been observed that babies infected with botulism do not completely recover.

Infant botulism is curable but as it occurs very severely, it is necessary that one learns and knows about the symptoms and is able to recognize it at an early stage. Honey is said to be a major source of botulism as it has the bacteria spores that causes this disease. So it is important that infants less than a year old should not be given honey.

Infant botulism occurs when a child consumes the Clostridium botulinum bacteria and its spores . These are normally found in the dust and dirt that have honey. The ailment affects the infants between the ages of three to six months. It has been seen that the babies are prone to it till the age of 1. the bacteria do not affect the elder children as much as their digestive system has the capacity to push the spores before they cause any kind of harm.

Babies on the other hand do not have the capacity to take care of the spores. Once a child takes in these spores they start multiplying and thus produce the toxin. This toxin then impediments the action of the nerves and the muscles and interferes with the functioning capacity of the infant to breathe, move and eat.

Adults and older kids are affected by another kind of botulism that is found to infect a wound which produces a toxin within . The botulism is food borne and is normally caused when the individual eats the home canned foods that has the toxin.

The symptoms of botulism are seen to appear anytime between the third or the thirtieth day. The infant ingests a lot of spores. The first sign is constipation . The doctor should be called immediately if the child hasn’t had a bowel motion for around three days.

The other symptoms are flat expressions of the face, a weak cry by the baby. The baby sucks feebly and has a decreased movement generally. Also it has trouble eating anything and drools a great deal. There is weakness of the muscles and the infant is seen to suffer from breathing problems. Whenever a parent sees any signs like these a doctor should instantly be called as botulism is treatable.

Treatment for infant botulism is usually in the hospital with the help of the newly found Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous or the BIGIV which is given in the early stages. Botulism can be prevented by not giving honey or any food containing honey.

Infant Botulism is mainly seen to be caused due to the Clostridium botulinum and its spores but it is curable.
