Feet are indicators of one’s health and well being and many times display telltale signs that must not be ignored. One can gauge several health ailments by apt analysis of one’s feet.
If the nails on the feet are showing serrated, curved in, brittle and aberrant growths then the underlying causes are due to inadequate iron intake occurring mostly in women due to factors like heavy menstrual or internal bleeding that causes anaemia which many times is accompanied by fatigue, cold feet, giddiness and headaches.
Sudden feet cramps are a sign of dehydration, inappropriate exercise or diet that is deficient of calcium, magnesium or potassium with expectant women most susceptible to this. A persistent wound many times foul smelling is a sign of elevated glucose levels that is accompanied by symptoms like continual thirst, hunger and urination, weariness, weight loss. Poor functioning thyroid gland or circulation can cause cold feet mostly in women who are in their forties. Though with age, nails do get discolored but when they turn dark in color or emit foul odour, it may be a sign of poorly maintained nails, fungal infection, onychomycosis, diabetes and those ailing from immune-deficient disorders.
If the big toe is swollen or enlarged then it is principally an indicator of gout that affects all ages. Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs commonly in elderly men in their forties to fifties due to overproduction of uric acid that lead to the formation of needle shaped crystals.
Dryness, flakiness of the skin should not be neglected as it could aggravate to inflammation, sores and lead to fungal infections like athlete’s foot. If pain or discomfort is experienced in the soles or sides of the feet while walking then it could be due to an underlying stress related fracture caused to reduced bone mass density or undernourishment.
In nippy weather many people experience that their toes go numb and cold with a change in colour ranging from white, blue to red and then coming back to its normal shade. This is caused due to Raynaud’s attacks which are mostly stress induced.
