Gardening can be justly therapeutic not only for you but also for the children. One can create a space for the child to play and nurture plants in. If the children like to hang out in the garden, one can opt for sand pits, tyre-made swings, outdoors children’s toys depending on the age bracket of the child.

Most definitely, the delight lies in the process and not in making something perfect. One can keep the child engrossed by helping them sow plants that germinate quickly like beans, marigold or lettuce. Plant varieties that have varied colors and shapes namely yellow, green and red capsicum, broccoli and cabbage are also viable options, with the fresh produce being used in daily meals. Fruits that can be grown in pots are lemon, guava and pomegranate. Children must be kept away from trees like apple, cherry, Horse Chestnut, Laburnum, Oak and Peach that cause poisoning in the system. While the unripe shoots of Asparagus, Flax, Rhubarb, Tomato leaves and the eyes, stems, spoiled parts of potato lead to toxicity in the system.

Herbs with gastronomic and medicinal aspect like creeping thyme and mint can be used as ground cover between stepping stones. Lavender, coriander, sage and oregano can form an ornate boundary. Plants like Calendula and borage add to the color brigade. Once herbs are planted in proper, damp soil, they not require much routine care.

One can make a burrow of flowering creepers like honeysuckle that will double up as a playhouse for the children. One must stay clear of thorny plants like cacti and bougainvillea that can cause harm to the child. Plants that leach milky secretions like ficus, poinsettia can cause skin inflammation.

One needs to remove all poisonous plants from the garden. House plants like Dieffenbachia, Elephant’s ear and Philodendron cause irritation of the skin, mouth and throat-lining. Castor Bean and Mistletoe cause stomach-intestinal irritation and poisoning of the system. Caladium causes irritation to mouth, throat, stomach and intestines.

Plants like poison ivy, Poinsettia, Poison Oak, Lady’s Slipper, Nettle causes skin irritation. Ornamental plants like Laurel, Oleander, Rhododendron, Autumn Crocus, Belladonna Lily, Hydrangea, Larkspur, Lily of the valley and Morning Glory cause poisoning to the system. While Daphne, Ivy, Yew, Wisteria, Christmas Rose, Daffodil, Hyacinth, Iris, Narcissus, Snowdrop and Sweet Pea cause gastric irritation.

Toxic field plants like Buttercup, Death Camas, Hemlock, White Bryony, Lupine, Milkweed, Nightshade and False Hellebore should be steered clear from. Marsh such as Sneezeweed and Water Hemlock are poisonous in nature while Skunk Cabbage cause gastro-intestinal irritation.
