- Always venture out early in the morning or travel in the night time, with the child fed well before start up to reduce messy times during the trip.
- Carry extra soft clothes that will double up as pillows to rest on during the trip. Keep a bag with extra nappies and cleaning materials at all times in the car. Keep a quilt to cover the child when asleep.
- Keep the child’s most adored sound tracks or story -telling tapes to play in the car. One can keep some special play toys set aside for car trips and give them one at a time to keep the interest going on for long. One can make special seat covers for front seats with multipurpose pockets to hold necessities. One can tie the child’s favoured toys on short leashes of string attached to the car seat.
- Avoid leaving the child on its own in the car, especially during high temperatures to prevent suffocating feeling. Put a vacuum sun shield or a piece of cloth or nappy in the window in front of him to prevent sun strokes or burns. Clear all loose items from the dashboard as well as the back window. Secure cutlery to the insides of the food containers with duct tape.
- Always carry extra drinks than what is needed, like those which are sealed or tetra packed in case of emergencies. It is preferable to keep a large container of diluted fruit extract juice in front of you, to hand over to the child at regular intervals. Grapes, glucose biscuits, cheese cubes, corn flakes are a great nibbles to quench thirst and hunger. - Keep a good stocking of disposal bags, tissue papers, paper bags and wipes to clear mess and make it a point to stay calm in cases of spillage, as children pick up moods from their parents.
- Make quick stopovers of short spans of time to curtail restless behaviour.
- Gift wrap or cloth wraps some of his toys which will keep him pre-occupied for some stance of the journey. Magnet games seem to be ideal to avoid parts getting misplaced. Stitch or stick Velcro on to his favourite play toys or games to help them stay in place.
