Novel Drug Targets Cancer Stem Cells
U.S. researchers have unravelled a new-fangled approach wherein a compound has been discovered that targets specific master cells that aid in the proliferation of breast cancer cells. The study conducted on mice involved the use of the drug salinomycin, a farm-derived antibiotic that exterminated breast cancer cells and retarded tumour escalation with far greater precision than several of the existent drugs. Many UK experts have cautioned that the parallel adaptation on humans would take a few years. A dubious reasoning as to the persistent recurrence of some cancers despite strong chemotherapy sessions has left scientists baffled. Many researchers have derived a conclusion that stem cells that are capable of being resistant to chemotherapy play a crucial role in seeding new tumours and boosting their numbers.
