Keloid, a hypertrophic scar that causes a tissue overgrowth at the site of a healing wound. They appear as stiff, rubber textured lesions or pink, dark red or dark brown coloured shiny leathery nodules mostly benign in nature, non-infectious and many times accompanied by intense itching. Keloids mostly ensue a skin trauma caused due to several trigger situations like women who undergo c-section deliveries, other surgeries, insect bites, scratching, burns and many times healed pimples turn into keloids. Keloids can occur in any age, many times in those who are more likely prone to it. Though there is no complete cure to Keloids, gels that contain allium cepa, allantoin and heparin have been used since long. Herbal topical applications comprising St. John’s wort, calendula officinalis and comfrey root have been adopted as effective alternative treatment.
