Soaring Abortion Rates Among Fourteen-Year-Old Girls

The rate of abortion procedures being conducted among fourteen year olds has risen by nearly a quarter in the past two years.

The harrowing statistics were revealed by the Department of Health wherein 166 girls belonging to this age underwent medical terminations of pregnancies the previous year as compared to 135 girls during the year 2006.

In case of the fifteen year old girls this number shot up to sixteen percent in the span of over 7 years.

England’s teen pregnancy statistics are the most undesirable in comparison to the figures noted in the Western Europe and comes in spite of a push of Government-led programmes.

In the initial part of the year, it was unearthed that young-aged girls who were on a six million pounds state-backed initiative for curbing pregnancies in poorer teens was unsuccessful and contrarily had majorly raised their likelihood of getting pregnant.

The United Kingdom literally tops the chart for having the maximum number of medical terminations of pregnancy in the western world with nearly two lakh abortions noted annually.

There has been a surge even in the number of teen pregnancies that analogously seems to be garnering top slot with forty thousand girls getting pregnant annually.

The newest statistics revealed by the Department of Health subsequent to a Freedom of Information request, uncovered that the aggregate number of medical termination of pregnancies conducted on below sixteen year old girls have risen from 3,658 during the year 2001 to 4,113 during 2008 – an increase of more than twelve percent.

Norman Wells from the Family and Youth Concern pointed out that the soaring abortion rates in teens was the foreseeable crop of a society that has made an icon of sexual gratification.

A spokesperson from the Department of Health stated that additional funding has been released to be used for contraceptive provisions and a campaign for raising alertness was on the cards.

The spokesperson however stated that there was genuine acknowledgement that there is dearth of endeavours being undertaken to lower the rates of teen pregnancies.
