Though the normal spate of getting hiccups is due to unmanageable constriction of the diaphragm muscles located underneath the lungs. This happens when one chomps down food too quickly, excessive intake of intoxicants or gulping in air. The much professed remedy to swallow water while being in a bent down posture is not the right thing to follow. Instead, merely containing one’s breathing, swiftly guzzling down water and inhaling in a bag aids in getting rid of hiccups.
At times the tonsils carry along undesirable visitors that appear as whitish, odorous bulgy formations that are quite bothersome. Dangling out in the tonsil pouches, these lumpy formations are formed due to mucous and microorganisms getting entrapped together forming a stone-like stuff known as tonsilloliths that leave an appalling after-taste in the throat. These could be taken out by simply loosening them with a small piece of cotton or cloth. If they are not causing any troublesome indicators, then no such treatment is needed.
Often while travelling by air, one has experienced the ears getting blocked and while yawning one feels a popping-up feeling in the inner ear. The discomfort in the ears is caused due to the variations in the air-pressure in outer and inner area of the ear drum due to changing heights. The sudden pop one senses while yawning is due to the opening up of the tube that interconnects the middle ear to the backside of the gullet that allows the air to pass through it. By simply closing the mouth, pinching the nose and mildly blowing out or by attempting to chew some gum would aid in relieving the symptoms.
Disquieting contractions or spasmodic sensations experienced in the muscles of the ankles or other part of the legs lasting up to many minutes is known as Charley Horse. Though the precise reason for these spasms is still not clear, it could be caused either due to muscle fatigue, improper diet lacking potassium and calcium and lack of fluids in the body. The spasms can be reduced by walking around or shaking, moving the leg and stretching the muscle. However, if the spasms continue one needs to promptly seek medical assistance.
