Hot Flushes Affect Both Sexes Alike

Submitted by Suparna on May 25, 2009 – 10:01 amNo Comment

hotflashesHot flashes are known to biologically affect many elderly women. Women who have crossed the reproductive phase and into the menopausal phase, experience great deal of discomfort due to hot flashes. There are recurrent occurrences of a feeling of intense or high temperature or heat, resulting profuse sweating , intense mood swings, depressive or suicidal  tendency and becoming extremely touchy to otherwise routine incidents. Many women who go through this phase feel extreme low self esteem many times. For a dismal group of women, the problem diminishes in few years while many suffer its side effects till they are quite old.

As these signs intensify these women experience several awkward moments and the disease might be the precursor to several heart ailments. These women afflicted with the menace are more prone to blocked arteries due high level of cholesterol and calciferous deposits. Although no studies have established the correlation between the above, the Estrogen dose taken seems to accelerate blocking of the arterial walls rather than treating the hot flushes. Women with prolonged periods of hot flushes must strictly monitor their lipid profile, blood pressure, cholesterol, and eat right and live more active lifestyles to prevent any obesity related diseases.

Recent research has revealed that men in their forties and fifties are known to be equal bearers of the brunt of this menace. Known to occur at night time, the profuse dribbling of sweat from the body is the tell tale sign in men, is caused due to decreased levels of the male hormone, testosterone. Many men get hot flushes in reaction to certain medicine doses, drugs and alcohol intake.  Many men have hot flushes along with high body temperature, shivering, reduction in body weight. These accosting symptoms might be the harbinger of other major complications like hyperthyroidism, TB, cancer, low levels of blood glucose in diabetics and sleeping disorders.

If one is going through profuse sweating once in a while without the need to have a dress change, there is no cause for worry. But if it is followed with high body temperature, body ache, scratching sensation and reduction in weight, one need to take medical help as soon as possible.
